We had a truly exciting experience exploring Poznań, Wrocław and Kraków with non-stop vegan food options.

We highly recommend using Happy Cow to find vegan options and vegan establishments, it’s worked very well for us at home in England and visiting Poland too. All three cities that we visited, whether they are known to be vegan friendly or not, had a plethora of choice giving us the benefit of being able to eat exclusively at fully vegan establishments the entire trip.

If you are planning to visit Poland or thinking of visiting Poland I promise you it will not disappoint, all of the food we ate was extremely well made and very affordable.

[Tempeh burger meal from Krowarzywa Vegan Burgers]

Our regular stop the entire trip was Krowarzywa Vegan Burgers, a fully vegan restaurant chain which you can find in most Polish cities. They serve burgers (including Beyond Meat!) wraps, kebabs and salad boxes. We had the Beyond, tempeh and fish finger burger all of which were very nice, came with lots of salad toppings, your choice of sauce and the option of a toasted wholemeal or brioche bun.
We also tried their kebabs which were perfectly succulent, containing lots of seitan meat and plenty of salad toppings as well.

[Vegab kebabs]

Another chain we visited was Vegab who focus on fully vegan kebabs in very large portions, comparatively to Krowarzywa Vegan Burgers these kebabs have more of a homemade, wholesome flavour whereas Krowarzywa’s kebabs were more of a typical takeaway style kebab but still just as flavoursome. Vegab has several different flavours, with very interesting combinations as well. I chose the marinated pineapple and mango puree option with no mayo, which I was advised against because the mayo keeps the wrap moist but as I predicted with all the salad fillings and juicy pineapple slices it was perfectly moist and satisfying.

For the best falafel we’ve ever had I highly recommend Mazaya Falafel, an authentic fully vegan falafel restaurant. The ‘super standard’ falafel wrap with spicy sauce was delicious and incredibly spicy! Typically in Poland the spicy food is not at all spicy, so if you’re missing spicy food this is the place to go.

Before we talk about our absolute favourite restaurant I wanted to briefly mention a couple other places we visited that were not as amazing but still fully vegan places that I recommend trying if the menus take your fancy.

[Katsu curry from No Bones Vegan Food]

Not far from the Wrocław train station is Warzywniak, where we ordered the chicken burger and peanut noodles. If the burger had less filling it may have been more enjoyable because I loved the patty itself but it had so much shredded carrot and sauce that it was quite the mess to devour. The noodles were tasty, wholesome and a nice healthy change from all the fast food we were eating. Also, the lemonade was filled with so many lemons and limes it was quite bitter and not pleasant. In all the places we ate, homemade lemonade was the standard drink and was a different flavour every time which I enjoyed and usually guzzled rather quickly, sadly this was not the case here in Warzywniak and at No Bones Vegan Food, a beautifully decorated restaurant hidden near Kraków’s old town.

The lemonade in No Bones was the only time I could taste sickly syrup which I am not a fan of. The food we ordered here was a not so traditional katsu curry which I enjoyed but found myself not finishing, I definitely prefer more punchy, salty flavours. This place did serve cake as well which may be worth a try as we were quite unsuccessful in finding vegan cakes or any vegan doughnuts despite Polands love of them.

[Autumn comfort food from Wilk Syty]

[Polish potato pancake from Wilk Syty]

Now, our favourite meal and activity in Wrocław was by far Wilk Syty. The most beautiful and delectable food you will ever try. My partner claimed it to be the best meal he has ever eaten in his life. This establishment clearly loves food and curating different menus and playing with different flavour combinations. It regularly switches up the menu and we were very lucky to try the ‘autumn comfort food’ plate, featuring deliciously breaded seitan chicken, herby mashed potato, creamy garlic and mushroom sauce and sautéed peaches. It was such a powerful combination of flavours that really made the mouth water and their blackcurrant lemonade was excellent.

I also tried the traditional Polish potato pancake with piped cream cheese and sliced radish, probably the most beautiful savoury pancake out there and was truly scrumptious. I love this restaurant.

To save on funds we typically had just one meal out every day and supermarket goodies the rest of the day. There are plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables to be had, fresh bread, cereals and pasta including tomato pasta sauce. The usual staples, however we did find in each supermarket a free from section with tempeh, Alpro yoghurt, dark chocolate, plant milk and in Wrocław vegan cheese spread! We also enjoyed buying frozen mango mochi, and gooey chocolate brownies from Żabka.

There are also Costas and Starbucks close to the old towns in cities, with plastic free freshly prepared bagels which I was impressed to see. There was typically a vegan chicken slice bagel sandwich, marmalade filled vegan croissant and vegan chocolate banana cheesecake to choose from which we didn’t try but looked well made.

So as a vegan surviving in Poland, would I do it again? Absolutely! Would I say that vegans are spoiled for choice? Not necessarily. There was at least two fully vegan establishments in each city, there are vegan alternatives sold in supermarkets and we also visited a health food shop which contained all vegan toiletries and beauty products. We definitely had enough to get by but compared to England there were not heaps of vegan options in the non-vegan establishments. But this is to be expected and I was very pleased with all of the vegan options that we did find. If you’re hesitant about visiting Poland because you’re vegan I say don’t hold back because there are so many amazing foods to try but by all means check out Happy Cow first, read up on those menus and maybe consider doing what we did and stay in apartments over hotels.
